There are traditional features you can use

  • Open to work feature

You can put a notification on your profile picture letting everyone know that you are looking for a new opportunity, or you have the option to only let recruiters know that you are open to work.

  • Jobs tab

Similar to other job recruiting services, you can do job searches from LinkedIn. Set up your parameters and let LinkedIn search for you, or you can set up a new search.

In addition to these traditional ways of getting a job using LinkedIn, what else can you do?

Keep your profile updated

It’s important to always keep your profile updated if you are open to new job opportunities. Potential employers will want to see your skills and qualifications at a glance.

If they are reviewing people on LinkedIn, the best thing you can do is ensure that your profile and experience are updated with the most recent information.

Make your “About” stand out

You can use the “About” section to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Write something eye-catching and lets recruiters and your network know a little about your experience and personality.

Quirky is okay but always remain professional.

Expand your network

One of my favorite phrases is, “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” You never know who you might meet or connect with that can provide your next great job opportunity.

Be willing to expand your network to include others in the same or a similar field as you. These people could be the gateway to your next job.

Be professional; separate your personal and business life

The number one thing to remember on LinkedIn, as on any social media network, is that the internet lasts forever. This means you might want to separate your personal and business life.

Your feelings about current events might be best left unsaid. You are entitled to your opinion, but remember that if you voice it, others may judge you for it.

LinkedIn is a great place to find new job opportunities, but it doesn’t work magically. With a little bit of effort, you can make LinkedIn work for you, and you can use it to get your next great job.
