After reading previous Somniloquy with L&C blogs, you know the importance of having good sleep hygiene. You know that nightly routines?impact your sleep schedule, and not to eat too close to bedtime. You realize the impact that alcohol?can have on your sleep, and you also know what happens when you don?t sleep well. When it comes to tips on sleep, you have become very well-versed. Sometimes despite your best efforts and adhering to the advice you receive, you still have problems sleeping. Are there other non-medicinal methods that can help you to get better sleep? Of course! Meditation is an easy and inexpensive method that you can try to help you get better sleep.

For centuries, meditation has been practiced. This mental exercise of contemplation has one focus their thoughts with the end-goal of achieving more spiritual awareness. Doing so enables one to calm their body and mind. This calmness can help one to achieve better sleep.

Do you have to be a professional or take special classes to maintain the benefits of meditation? Far from it! To experience the benefits that meditation has to bring, in today?s day and age, all one has to do is pick up their phone. Apps such as Calm, Headspace, and others, used for only a few minutes a day, can help people with focus, relaxation, stress, sleep, and more!

If you want to start meditating, there are a few simple meditation techniques you can try right now. Just find a quiet space where you can focus and have few distractions. Try to make yourself as comfortable as possible, and be aware of your body in addition to your mind. Then give one of these a try:

  • Duplicating dialogue?- If you repeat something over and over, you can create a mantra for yourself. You can even find mantra?s online that you can try. Whatever it is that you repeat, by saying the same phrase repeatedly, you should achieve focus and calmness.
  • Picture perfect?- The same way that vision boards provide their users a focus on what they want to achieve, just visualizing something calming can help you to experience tranquility.
  • Just breathe?- Controlled breathing is a great way to aim for inner peace. By paying attention to each breathe that you take, you have a focus that can keep your mind clear.
  • Pay attention?- whether you are walking, eating, reading, or doing another activity, by paying attention to the intricacies of what you are doing, you can also find repose. If you are eating, savor the flavor and feel the texture. If you are walking, look on the path you take so that you can notice things that previously had escaped you.

Once you find the meditation technique that works best for you, you should be on your way to better sleep. You can even try many of these techniques when you lay down in your bed for the night. Then just plump your pillow, straighten your sheets, and start having a calming rest.
